I don't know if I have the exact quote or its author, but, I am going to say that the 18th Century writer and orator, Diderot, is responsible for:

"Make me laugh, make me cry, break my heart; only then, regal my eyes."

This was a commentary and an exhortation to artists of the time, about the ultimate purpose of a creative (visual) work. Paraphrasing the meaning - Paintings and sculpture should have visual credibility and beauty, but primarily, should have something to "say," some meaning to convey.

I have read a number of articles by Newsviners, that "have something to say;"

I'm not referring to those with political or other so-called "newsworthiness," but to the more personal, more human-interest kinds. Indeed, a few stand out in my mind although some were posted months ago. And it is from within these kinds of articles that I hope to be sent, the "gems" I am looking for.

I will not embarrass by naming any of the Newsviners to whom I have alluded but hope that they and others will submit their writing in the following way;

* Give me, in a comment, a one or two line (not more) piece of poetry or prose...something prophetic, profound, deep, moving, humorous, ironic...ORIGINAL...and I will put it with an image crediting the author.

* If/when I put the poetry/prose within a graphic, I will place the name of the NEWSVINE author (the screen name) along with my name and © symbol. I will also include the date, establishing the copyrights.

* HONOR SYSTEM - all author/submitters agree by virtue of their submission, that, should I use their submission as part of a graphic (as explained above), I thereby authorize them to copy that graphic for personal use ONLY as a screensaver/wallpaper. They agree that no derivatives are permitted nor any modifications to my artwork.

NOTE: I hope that I do not appear pompous or arrogant with the use of my images; in reality, some might be insulted to be associated with my images; my objective in this challenge is to "push" authors into "pushing themselves" by offering a "prize" of sorts and bragging rights. I believe I am qualified to do this as I have been a newspaper editor (now retired), a published author (still active), a published photographer (still active) and a dependable friend, decent fly-fisherman...well, just go with the professional stuff.

I don't want anyone to feel insulted or to take any of this personally should you not "win" - that would sadden me. Should I edit your poetry (part of the understanding that goes along with a submission) - the replacement of a word for a more effective word, a corrected misspelling - nothing radical or extensive - it's part of the exercise/challenge. Fair enough?

Let me see some really well thought-out, well constructed one or two line gems.

I'm ready when you are.

A Mac,

When you have a chosen a winner, what then will you do with their words and the photograph? I mean, where does this lead to?

jsbach asked,

When you have a chosen a winner, what then will you do with their words and the photograph? I mean, where does this lead to?

js

It doesn't lead to anywhere other than the author's desktop if he/she so chooses as per my article. I own the images - the graphic, created for this article only, will not be used again except (possibly) by the author of the text.

Should anyone copy the graphic without authorization (as per my article), and it turns up in some way, shape or form, there may well be a copyright infringement issue; I assure you, no one wants that headache.

Now js, I ask you, what was your reason for asking?

And, since the issue has been raised by jsbach, before I post any graphics, if there are any legitimate objections, I will close the article and forget it.

It was a legitimate question and I am at a loss, here.

And, since the issue has been raised by jsbach, before I post any graphics, if there are any legitimate objections, I will close the article and forget it.

All I did was ask a question and because of that question, you are threatening to delete your article? Why? Why would you do that to those who wish to participate? This makes no sense!

I thought this was started by you to have fun with people and to enjoy something different other than the heated discussions of late involving politics. I saw the other article on the photographs and I was having the best of time watching everyone come up with a caption to match the photo.

What I can do is to give you my word that I will not come back or address you again. Would that help? I will be more than happy to do that. But, whatever you do, please don't take this away from others.

It was a legitimate question and I am at a loss, here.

It followed in close time proximity to another questioning of a comment I left in another article. When I responded to your critical and negative comment there, you left another here.

I have been plagued several times in my photography articles by inappropriate comments, which I addressed, only to receive evasive, further comments that escalated the negative environment.

You wrote,

What I can do is to give you my word that I will not come back or address you again. Would that help? I will be more than happy to do that. But, whatever you do, please don't take this away from others.

No, it wouldn't help. What would help is your simple answer as to why you asked your original question particularly since it was the second in as many days...neither of which you were willing to explain when I specifically asked.

I don't want you to leave, I don't want to take down the article - I just want know why you would ask...

where does this lead to?

I offer the use of my copyright protected images, give a NEWSVINER a share of that copyright, allow them to copy my image, offer in essence, a tutorial on editing and design, and for my effort, you ask "where does this lead to?"

Stiil can't see why I'd like an explanation?

A. Mac

A Mac - you are doing it again.

There is no negative connotation to JS' question, she simply asked what this was about as she did not understand; all it deserved was a straightforward answer, like

"It doesn't lead to anywhere other than the author's desktop if he/she so chooses as per my article. I own the images - the graphic, created for this article only, will not be used again except (possibly) by the author of the text."

You had originally said "my objective in this challenge is to "push" authors into "pushing themselves" by offering a "prize" of sorts and bragging rights" - but this isn't clear

This is not the first time - why do you assume that the person (jsbach) is being negative? There is no negativity in her comment. Your reaction is uncalled for

jsbach,

I do not want you to leave. I will not delete the article.

Please look at some of my earlier articles and see the reasons for what I feared might happen again. Lucy's image is posted...I wish you had answered my questions but I hope you will stay.

I will set aside my feelings about what began with someone posting an Ansel Adams photo, taking credit for its authorship, insisting it was a joke, then returning to a future article and hijacking it! And though I asked over-and-over for answers from this individual(s), always evasion. Actually, Lucy is quite familiar with the situation.

Stay here, please.

Hey, again I know I am late to this discussion...

I don't know if this is part of the question... but this is a good opportunity for practice...

but my question is ... if someone like Lkessler, wanted to create a portfolio to show in getting a job or something, so long as all parties involved are given due credit (as you have on your cover art) would that be ok????

My porfolio is so old... I will have to dust... er off.

DragonWoman,

I'm not sure I understand your question, but, if your asking if the image used in conjunction with this article could be used as part of a portfolio, I would say "probably not" and here's why.

A prospective employer might assume that the image, which is my copyright was LKessler's and down the road, if the image were to appear in a magazine, etc. under my name (either © A. Macarthur or my real and professional name) it could prove embarrassing or worse, raise questions of copyright infringement, etc. .

Under certain circumstances, like using the image as a screen saver or wall paper, if I am first asked, I may say yes with the proviso that no other use, derivative or transmission of the image.

If I have not still answered the question, restate it and I will try again.

newsblog,

This is on hold right now - see comments #3 and 4.

A very interesting sequence has developed and I don't think it's coincidence; I'm going back over old articles and comments and finding some disturbing similarities.

This article, should it continue as per the parameters I set, will possibly have a number of "winning" submissions although I will be more critical in judging because I want this to be something of a "classroom."

But, if a diversion/distraction/troll is afoot, I'll possibly just stand pat and see if "group" pressure can flush out a culprit. That's where I am right now.

Dude, good catch. I have run into this particular poster on some other threads in the past and I must say I did think like you just did.

Notice how you asked for a reason and all you got was that it is a legitimate question but yet no reason. Evasive, ain't it.

This is a tough one A. Mac as I don't consider myself a poet so to speak. I will dig deep though because I really like the concept.

I used to post flyers each week for my employees that were kind of like this. I used others quotes and such(giving them credit) and called them "Thoughts to Ponder"

Love the one Lucy suggested! This is a great series of articles.

The prose can be any or all of those "feelings", wrote with out the vision of selected picture right? One or two lines ,omg,

StarSmiles,

Don't try and write the prose or poetry to fit any particular image (I have thousands of images); this challenge is kind of the opposite of the other where I put up the image first and VINERS tried to make their words fit the image.

I'm looking for excellent writing in the form of one or two original lines that say something profound, funny, powerful, philosophical, thoughtful. etc.. In this challenge, the image won't inspire your words - the inspiration will come entirely from you, the author. The words will be my inspiration to use just the "right" image to complete the final work.

Here are some ideas for authors:

Pay attention to your own thoughts - if you happen to look at a child for example, and you are experiencing a feeling...think about that feeling...go beyond the surface feeling..."I love this child," - take it deeper..."What is this feeling...," "How am I able to feel this feeling?" - push it..."Where do feelings come from?" - keep pushing it - "I'm not sure why or how I feel love, only that I love the way it feels...to feel it."

I don't want this challenge to be easy - I may even ask you to go back and work on a submitted line, tell you..."it's a start but it's not ready for prime time - fix it - work on it."

If I do my part, some of you will call me names and decide that you don't like me...good! Make me change my mind, give me something better...you want to argue...good...but be prepared to have me tell you why your submission didn't get an image.

"Winning" isn't the bottom line in this challenge; getting you to write stronger, more efficiently - (don't stick that extra word in your poem - you don't need that word), smarter - respect your ability and don't be intimidated - if you are a normal human being, you will get it wrong before you get it right. It's how learning happens.

Trust me a little.

eriq,

It followed in close time proximity, another questioning by that individual, of a comment I left in another article. When I responded to a critical and negative comment there, the commenter came here and left another here. And consistently - no specific response to specific questions. If someone is going to be evasive constantly, it makes me wonder why. Make a statement - own the statement...don't play games...don't be cute.

The other article had to do w/Rachael Maddow and Dick Armey. My comment was well received, tongue-in-cheek and on target. The criticism was condescending and, in any event, what's the problem with such dialogues?

I am working on some large projects and only check Newsvine once-a-day, and only am on-line sparingly. This is it for today.

Check the Maddow/Armey comment and see for yourself the context and sequence to which I referred.

Peace, eriq.

Dude,

Don't let them get to ya. As it stands, everyone knows that your original question: "why did she ask that question?" still remains unanswered by her or by her apologists like eriq. If there is no reason for someone asking a question, the only conclusion is that they are trolling or they got a million monkeys on keyboards to do that for them.

I totally get your point about she following you from one thread to here. That's what trolls are good at. They just want to antagonize you. It's a good thing you recognized it and called it right away and nipped it in the bud.

Excuse me if I am out of place, but as the conversation is on a public message board and has caused confusion well , the innuendo of copyright and publishment seem to be the question .

Well people if you post it on a message board, it is auto timed ,dated with ur name , it becomes open to the public, don't write anything you done want others to use. Once it is on line ,hey it is viewed by the world. If you write for profit, make sure only your publicist sees your works until published and stay off message boards.

Dont be so vain as to think everything you write has a monetary value, the value is in the worth of self, one has put into it. Me - I have copyrights and published works nothing big, poetry is a hard item to sell, BUT - I have donated my works to scholarships for the past 35 years, if one can profit from something I have felt the joy in sharring with them than bless them, it blesses me .

Yes it can get legal and scare the tar outta you, but the fact is in the inital Topic, AMac ,you expressed your goal of this being a project for those whom wanted to do it for the fun of writing, A Grand Plan, I do hope you stay encouraged .smiles StarSmilesUSA
