I don't know if I have the exact quote or its author, but, I am going to say that the 18th Century writer and orator, Diderot, is responsible for:
"Make me laugh, make me cry, break my heart; only then, regal my eyes."
This was a commentary and an exhortation to artists of the time, about the ultimate purpose of a creative (visual) work. Paraphrasing the meaning - Paintings and sculpture should have visual credibility and beauty, but primarily, should have something to "say," some meaning to convey.
I have read a number of articles by Newsviners, that "have something to say;"
I'm not referring to those with political or other so-called "newsworthiness," but to the more personal, more human-interest kinds. Indeed, a few stand out in my mind although some were posted months ago. And it is from within these kinds of articles that I hope to be sent, the "gems" I am looking for.
I will not embarrass by naming any of the Newsviners to whom I have alluded but hope that they and others will submit their writing in the following way;
* Give me, in a comment, a one or two line (not more) piece of poetry or prose...something prophetic, profound, deep, moving, humorous, ironic...ORIGINAL...and I will put it with an image crediting the author.
* If/when I put the poetry/prose within a graphic, I will place the name of the NEWSVINE author (the screen name) along with my name and © symbol. I will also include the date, establishing the copyrights.
* HONOR SYSTEM - all author/submitters agree by virtue of their submission, that, should I use their submission as part of a graphic (as explained above), I thereby authorize them to copy that graphic for personal use ONLY as a screensaver/wallpaper. They agree that no derivatives are permitted nor any modifications to my artwork.
NOTE: I hope that I do not appear pompous or arrogant with the use of my images; in reality, some might be insulted to be associated with my images; my objective in this challenge is to "push" authors into "pushing themselves" by offering a "prize" of sorts and bragging rights. I believe I am qualified to do this as I have been a newspaper editor (now retired), a published author (still active), a published photographer (still active) and a dependable friend, decent fly-fisherman...well, just go with the professional stuff.
I don't want anyone to feel insulted or to take any of this personally should you not "win" - that would sadden me. Should I edit your poetry (part of the understanding that goes along with a submission) - the replacement of a word for a more effective word, a corrected misspelling - nothing radical or extensive - it's part of the exercise/challenge. Fair enough?
Let me see some really well thought-out, well constructed one or two line gems.
I'm ready when you are.
A. Mac
