stupid question #1

can it be a real event/story?

stupid question #2

can we include a picture?

CCArm,

Neither question is "stupid."

You can certainly write about a real event ... as long as you submit your own, original written piece.

But the picture ... that's my part of the deal. Sorry.

Actually, I am good with that ;-) okay, I'm in.

    CCArm,

Let me think about the inclusion of pictures (let's say, maybe just one submitted with an entry). I don't want a picture to enter into consideration of the author's work as an author (rather than as a photographer).

Again, let me think about it ... off the top of my head, if the written entry stands strong on its own, and, it is understood that an accompanying picture has no bearing on how the writing is considered, a picture might work.

Thinking ... and let's do it this way ... I won't state what I decide about picture inclusions ... if, when the entries are showcased, there are pictures, everyone will know the decision, and if there are not, it may be that there were no pictures submitted, or, none we chose to include, or, maybe next time.

    Fair enough?

As I always said I respect the advice of those who have 'been there and done that' than that which comes from the 'goody two shoes' who only know what they have been taught. It has far more basis in fact and generally is way more practical in its application. My philosopy has always been 'how can we know sin lest we have experienced it.' LOL

Mac's pictures are the most beautiful images...and are very popular...and we have so many talented writers here on the vine...what could be a better marriage than that??

    Thank you, love.

Now, as tactfully as I can, I would like to ask a question which may lead people to misunderstand me, a little.

Is Sara the one who will judge the work? This is so hard to ask, but I hope Sara understands I'm a little strange. You already know of my paranoia, so I hope this comes out better than it appears.

For instance, I may write something that appeals to you, but not her. What if it lacks description, theme, proper editing, and such. I think I'm asking what you two, the judges, are looking for. Yes, that's it, what are you looking for from the writings submitted? Or, am I making this into something more than necessary?

I'm detailed to a fault, so forgive me, please.

    Soosalah,

Sara G. and myself will "judge" collaboratively ... we communicate and work well together and both want this endeavor to be a combination of

    * display of writing talents which promotes ...

    * the establishment/deepening and growth of a group of "friends" a community of individuals who like ideas, who are thinkers and creators and who want to express themselves and share those expressions.

We have no preconceived ideas as to what we'd like written in any given "competition" - the only thing we have in the way of pre-requisite is for authors to try and ...

... make us laugh, make us cry, break our hearts ... dig deep ... GO WITH WHATEVER YOU FEEL, PERCEIVE, SENSE and/or EXPERIENCE ...

The images that "launch" a given competition are to get the imagination, the thought processes and ideas flowing. Every image (in my opinion) is what's called POLY-REFERNTIAL ... each will mean something different to every viewer ... subject matter aside ... in this case, docked boats at night ... the image could remind an author of a particular place, person, event ...

it's not the CONTENT/SUBJECT of the IMAGES, it's about THE STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS it hopefully evokes and to where that stream takes your thoughts and, eventually your "pen."

Sara G. may add to this answer ... so stay tuned ... but also, begin at least jogging your mind, heart and soul and go with it.

This "competition" is more about sharing than winning. It's a place for ideas and creative expression of those ideas ... word paintings ... hearts on sleeves ...emotional roller coaster rides ... again ...

... make us laugh, make us cry, break our hearts ... dig deep ... GO WITH WHATEVER YOU FEEL, PERCEIVE, SENSE and/or EXPERIENCE ...

    How's that?

      Soosalah,

I don't see a problem with clipping to groups ... let Sara G. weigh in on this too in case I'm unaware of a related problem - if it brings more interest, why not?

Tags? Anyone who wants to suggest tags, as long as they "work," leave them as a comment and let us know they're suggested "tags."

Can I send it as an attachment?

As long as the attachment is in readable, editable form ... that for layout purposes, not for actual editing. Some documents are not going to open on computers that don't have the application in which they were created. That's why e-mail is best.

As for 305 words ... we're not counting the words, and we don't expect anyone to drop the last five words of a last sentence to make the word count. But if you're entry is at 298 words and you add a 50 word sentence ... you might consider a shorter closing line.

Hi A. Mac and Sara --

I can only speak for myself. I thought your opening remarks were very clear, and I had no questions. Everything was very well spelled-out. My only issue remains -- it is still a competition - being judged and compared against others - and I have always found that to be intimidating. I don't know, I might still submit something, but at this point, I am uncertain. Please don't hate me for being honest (I know you two won't; just felt like saying that. (:)

Soosalah, I'm glad that you are at least considering writing something. All I can offer you here is the fact that not all writing appeals to everyone. I'm not a huge fan of SciFi...but if someone were to write ...for instance....that .....

"the lights that appeared to the normal eye to be for security reasons, proved to me, that we are not alone...the wavering in the waters surface was more than the water undulating beneath the midnight moon, it was the effort of the "lights" to send word to the mother ship that they had made contact..."

But the idea that someone could come up with something so ..what I may consider far-fetched would be very interesting to me!

I have no idea what anyone is going to get out of the above picture. I know I happen to love it...it raises so many different emotions in me that I am sorry I cannot enter! *Laughs*

I am not "judging" anyone, I am merely reading entries about what the above picture makes you think, feel, see.....and want to write.

I think that you may have stated it correctly when you said I'm detailed to a fault, so forgive me, please.

This is a competition in the respect that everyone is working from the same picture. It is not a competition for or against each other. Soos, every day people you don't know read your writings....don't let this opportunity pass because you do not know me. Hey go read me, I'm as plain as dirt, and work hard for a living, I have a mortgage, kids, animals, bills to pay and a lawn that needs mowing, only because it's full of weeds...and that is the only part of the lawn that grows....

I don't know what else I can say.

I hope you'll take part, this is supposed to be a "fun event" but...if to you, this is not fun, than it is not an event in which you should take part, no one should be stressing over entering something. Mac and I have worked hard to try to keep this light and fun, hopefully we have been successful.

CL1, I'm glad it was all clear for you. We worked hard to make sure, or at least tried to make sure that the rules for the event were simple and clearly spelled out.

I'm sure we are going to hit a lot of bumps in the road, but this first journey out will help us for the next one, and the next one will help with the next one...and at some point in time, hopefully we will have perfected it! *grins*

Of course, it will also show us what the interest level is.

Hopefully it is enough to keep this alive for a long time, I really think it could be fun...and soo interesting for everyone!

          Sara G.,

Thank you for your reply. I fully understand what the goal is (even beyond the competition itself), and you two should be commended for your efforts in an attempt to establish a 'uniting' goal as I believe you see it as such.

I think anyone that is already interested in A. Mac's photography, as well as anyone that likes to 'write', will possibly take the time to submit an offering. There are a few that enjoy Scott's challenges that may show up here, also.

I wish you the best in your continuation of this noble cause. :^)

Anyone who has read my comments about photos submitted for Foto-Friday or the Photographers Group monthly challenge knows that I don't leave negative critiques - I find some aspect of every image that is good and talk about that ... then encourage the photographer to post more.

Remember the Robin Williams movie Patch Adams ... there's a line in that film ...

"You don't have to be a prick to get things done."

That's how I feel about things like this competition and anyone with the courage to say, "this is my work ... these are my feelings." The winners in these competitions, metaphorically speaking, will be the entries that grab the tightest, or, stroke the most gently ... that shine the brightest light on the space to be illuminated at the time...

We don't fall in love with everyone we meet, nor hate them all ... we are each of us, the sum total of everything we've experienced to a given point in time ... so, a "winner" is not "the champion of all time," rather, "a standout in a moment."

Like a memorable moment in life.

Write my friends ... share yourselves.

          "a standout in a moment" -- I like that, A. Mac., a good summation. I hope I get inspired - shock-therapy may be in order. . . for me, anyway. :)

brother scott is a good friend, as are sara a brother mac (though i have only met, in person, scott), but i have never entered one of his challenges. my problem is, i never know when something will pop in my head (i'm still waiting for the rude blood vessel to go boom).

i never would have made a paid writer, because a dead-line would simply be...out of the question, hahaha. i cannot write, it seems, in this fashion. i usually do it on the spur (that ain't what i meant, yall, so stop it...sounds kinda...kinky, oohhh).

if i have the gist of this, we are to write something, inspired (hopefully) by the photo of the ships in the harbor, after sun-down, correct. doesn't have to have anything to do with little boats, or suns...going down...up...sideways (my favorite sinatra song...'i did it sideways'), ect. RIGHT???

i want to give this a shot. it might, and probobly will, take awhile. but if i chatch myself reasionably caffinated, and when the pain meds are working JUST right, i might be able to dash something...well, i was going to say reasonably intelligible, but that is being too optimistic !!!

          luv,

          ron

hey sara, i wrote my story in my head, while i was showering and blow-drying my hair (i told ya things just POP into my head, usually at the weirdest times).

that is something that i would be interested in, how everyone goes about writing...their process, ect. that would be very intriguing, don't you think???

Your entry shows up as a link and there's nothing at the link. Try sending it again ... the entry itself rather than a link.

I don't know if Sara G. is having the same problem so just submit the text entry.

          Thanks,

It's the black and white image of boats ... several lines below our (mostly) orange banner ... top of page, then scroll down.

          ron,

You can publish it anywhere you like ... I guess it could be thought of in the same way as a book, or pamphlet or film ... may copies available to many people at various sources.

The only drawback I see ... if/when we showcase it here, some people may not be seeing it for the first time. But the author should always have the freedom to determine where/when his work appears.

A Mac, 300 words or less? You're killing me pal. LOL Gosh, now I am going to have to compose my usual 1500 word composition and try and 'squeeze' it down to 300 words and have it still make sense. :=) Sorry that I am late getting to this but I have been fooling around with our VD card competition and a little photo essay project that I just dropped onto Vine Vixens. I have had a devil of a time figuring out all the 'techie' stuff just to get it to come out right. I still don't know what gives with the Vine. My lead in just vanished after I previewed it and posted it so I added a comment as a summary of what I said and then it just magically reappeared{??}. Weird!!! Anyway, I'll give it a shot.

Lord, I feel like I am back in journalism class. Let's see, who, what, where, when, sum it up in first paragraph and expand in body, ARGH!!!!

Take a good look at the above photo...the subject should be in there for you *smiles*

It to me seems to be your kind of picture...I look forward to reading your submission!

Quite right ... I lead authors away from the image of the boats, which of course was and is intended to be the inspiration point of the entries.

In my writing ... "The IMAGE is to set a tone, a feeling, a mood ... you do not have to write about the image content ... you don't need to reference it at all ... just go with the feelings it (hopefully) precipitates ... ," I potentially re-directed the basic tenet of "using the image to generate the words."

So ... all right ... this time we are likely to see a wide latitude of content ... not a bad thing at all ... but in subsequent competitions/showcases ... the image will call the tune and the authors will put lyrics to that tune.

Indeed, Sara G., I am the one who steered my own boats off course ... and thankfully, you have righted the ship with ...

          I read this poem once...

"Its not my job to steer the ship

          or even ring the bell

but let the darn thing spring a leak

          and see who catches hell"
