If you haven't seen my article that explains and illustrates the way I set up for bird (and other wildlife) photography. I hope you will, then come back to this article.
It's here ...

I've photographed quite a few species of mammals, insects, flowers, wild mushrooms, a few snakes, box turtles and other wild things that, luckily for me, come through my back yard (which I have written about in past articles); but of all wild things I've photographed, by far, the most challenging and most rewarding, are birds.
I'm specifically referring to shots of birds that are almost full-frame, that serve as "portraits" or "behavior" and biologically viable images.
For several years, I have tried for near-perfect shots of several bird species that come by ... and have had no success based on standards I set for myself. But yesterday and today, I kind of hit the bird-lottery-photo jackpot; a Downy Woodpecker and a Carolina Wren ... I am going to share them with NV friends ... and forgive me if I sound like I'm gloating ... after all ...
God/Nature/The Cosmos are the creators of beauty ...
I just take pictures.
