Sometimes publishers' image requests are highly specific and straightforward; when a deadline is imminent, those requests are the most stress-free, assuming of course, the publisher approves and accepts what is submitted as satisfying the request.
Other requests are more nebulous ... but with parameters ... those are often a pain-in-the-butt because the publisher himself doesn't really know what he's looking for ... really!
Like ... "Show me an animal portrait ... but NOT just a picture of an animal ... maybe something with a twist ... a different look ... you know ... make it stand out from similar images ... "
Dude ... I DON'T know ... different how?
Starting with endless possibilities but little else, the pair of images above is what I submitted ...
I have no idea why, out of all I might have come up with, I came up with these ...
The publisher's art editor e-mailed ... "I like your antique images; we'll use one or both."
Yeah ... they're antique images ... yeah ...
That's exactly what I was thinking when I modified them from the originals ... taken way back a couple weeks ago.
Yeah ... "Antique Images."
Pretty damn clever of me huh, Ms. Art Editor?
Sometimes "lucky" is better than "good."
